Its World Environment Day today!

World Environment Day,commemorated each year on 5 June. This special day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The main international celebrations of World Environment Day 2008 will be held in New Zealand, in the city of Wellington this year.
The World Environment Day is being celebrated in many ways, including street rallies, bicycles parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more. In many countries, this annual event is used to enhance political attention and action.

Let us take this day to seriously examine and reflect our daily actions contributing to our environment. Well, it is a fact that the climate is changing. The choices we make that impact on the environment should be changing as well. By making the right choices now, we can at least slow down climate change. Climate change affects you and me, both physical and mental health.
Here are some ways within our abilities to save the environment.

(a)Monitor your energy consumption. If your monthly energy consumption is higher than national average shown on bill, assess your family's electricity usage & see how you can cut down on usage.

(b)Switch off, when not in use. Energy consumed by appliances & electronic equipment in standby mode can account for up to 10% of your total electricity bill. Switch off the mains when not in use.

(c)Use electric fan instead of aircon.Aircon consumes 10 times more energy than electric fan. Use fan, where possible. We have enough of air con in the office. Too much air con makes the skin very dry and damp energy accumulates in our body. That is also one of the main reason for all the aching pain...

(d)Use Natural lighting.Use natural lighting whenever possible. If lights are required, use energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs which consume 80% less energy than standard bulbs.

(e)Use of Aircon.Ensure that windows and doors are closed in aircon areas.Ensure that air temperature is maintained within 22.5-25.5°C, specified in the S'pore Standard Code of Practice for Mechanical Ventilation & Air-conditioning in buildings. Dirty air filters impede airflow, leading to increased energy consumption. Check the air filters once a month and clean or replace them as necessary.

(f)Lights off, when not in use. Make it a habit. Turn off lights in unoccupied room or whenever not required.Turn off lights during lunchtime and before leaving office.

(g)Purchase Energy Star models as these are more energy efficient & are fitted with power management features.

(h)Shut Down.Enable the power management feature on your PC & set your other office equipment to automatically power down when they are not in use for more than 15 mins.Turn all equipment off before leaving office at night and over the weekends.

(i)Do not waste food. Many unseen hardwork and resources behind the scene. Many people are starving or under nutrition in this world.
